Subject: Hot Jupiter/SuperEarth exploration. 13th October 2008, 1:15 am
Given recent thought into how the proximity of Mercury to the sun complicates observation, if we were in an extrasolar system with a hot Jupiter or a hot SuperEarth, or if such a world were in our solar system, how might it be studied?

We can get the atmosphere by looking at the limbs of the planet before it crosses the Sun (central star).

Mercury is hard enough to observe so I suspect a close-in planet would be significantly more difficult to observe. Too close and it would be forever competing with the sunlight. However it would also be much brighter than Mercury or even Venus. Some people can actually see the crescent form of Venus and Jupiter as a tiny disk. A hot-Jupiter would be closer than regular Jupiter, intensely bright and perhaps possess a perceptible disk.
