Planet Classification - Temperature Range Empty
PostSubject: Planet Classification - Temperature Range   Planet Classification - Temperature Range Empty3rd November 2008, 1:53 am

Again, trying to mimic the stellar classification.

#
Description
0-0.5 3000K+, this would place it in the hotter dM regime.
1-1.5 2500K, this would place it in the dM8-9 spectra. Probably irradiated planets and irradiated protoplanets.
2-2.5 1300K, this would place it in the dL spectra.
3-3.5 ~900K
4-4.5 ~700K, beginning of the dT spectra. Possibly the temp when Jupiter was a protoplanet, based on an AJ paper, (sorry, no links).
5-5.5 ~350K
6-6.5 ~275K, mean Earth temp. range (287K).
7-7.5 ~150K
8-8.5 ~75K
9-9.5 ~50K to 0K
This is a rough estimate. Any suggestions on possibly where to break up or move things around, drop a note. As for the very hot area, WASP-12b is ~2525K. It has already surpassed the dL star temperature range. And this planet is being irradiated by a normal star, not a hot pulsar. Sections, 8, 8.5, 9, and 9.5 might not be very different. They may even be combined if there are more breaks in the lower numbers of hotter temperatures.

D'oh, too many windows. This needs to move to Extrasolar Planetology. Sorry for the error.

That's neat. I developed a system of classification myself, it includes both stars and planets on one scale, but it still needs some work. Might post it here actually.

Any plans on posting it on this forum?
