http://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-hosts-media-teleconference-to-announce-latest-kepler-discoveries

NASA will host a news teleconference at noon EDT Thursday, July 23 to announce new discoveries made by its planet-hunting mission, the Kepler Space Telescope.
The first exoplanet orbiting another star like our sun was discovered in 1995. Exoplanets, especially small Earth-size worlds, belonged within the realm of science fiction just 21 years ago. Today, and thousands of discoveries later, astronomers are on the cusp of finding something people have dreamed about for thousands of years -- another Earth.

Earth-like world ?? 1,400 light years away called Kepler 452b not what I expected it is minineptune with dense hydrogen envelope

KOI-7016.

I'll be interested to see how they determine the age so confidently.

And, you guys are hella pessimists.

Well I expected something around 1.2 earth radius with insolation little lower than earth but would be no problem with this planet if we would be sure is rocky but probably is not ,and like you know Shellface we will wait quite long for precise measurement of mass by RV.So really for me it does not matter if habitable planets are around G2V or K0V star.We know is easier detect signal potential planets if are closer to host star to quicker measure their masses, important factor is also whether are not tidally locked.http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/atoms/files/ms-r1b.pdf

Why is the news release still going on about planets less than twice the size of Earth?

Hello??

That was the pre-Kepler mission estimate of where the terrestrial planet transition was. Better estimates exist now!!!

There probably are other amazing planets in the Kepler data sets just awaiting confirmation, as was hinted at in the announcements today. KOI-7235.01, for example, is not yet confirmed as a real exoplanet, but there are strong hints at that it could be a world just 20 percent bigger than Earth orbiting a sun-like star, and within the range of Earth's year. If confirmed, it would almost surely be "The most Earth-like planet yet."

From the paper at http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/atoms/files/ms-r1b.pdf

Quote :
We note that it is unlikely that Kepler-452b has an Earth-like composition: we computed the density of Earth-like composition planets for the SpecMatch realizations according to Fortney et al. (2007, i.e., a rock-iron mixing ratio of 2/3 in Eq. 8 therein) and found that only 16% and 22% of the Weiss & Marcy (2014) and of the Wolfgang et al. (2015) realizations, respectively, were at least as dense as that predicted for Earth-composition planets.
So even if it is rocky, it probably has a relatively small iron core. Not sure what that would do for maintaining a magnetic field.

Well some exoplanets with 1.5 earth radii which surely are rocky have lower rock/iron ratio than earth. It could be the case that one 1.6 earth radius planet with high  iron/rock ratio can have small hydrogen envelope and another with the same mass can be purely rocky having smaller ratio iron/rock. Kepler 138 b has only 2/3 mass of Mars but is surely rocky and  has no iron

I have to admit I was somewhat surprised at the radius of the planet, too. Not sure it deserves this level of hype.

It did not at all, they should wait for confirmation KOI7235.01.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/kepler-mission-discovers-a-near-twin-of-earth-orbiting-sunlike-star/

« …In addition to Kepler 452 b, the team has discovered 11 yet-to-be-confirmed candidate planets that appear to be small, rocky and potentially suitable for life. One of them, presently known only as KOI-7235.01, looks to be only 15 percent larger than Earth, and orbits right in the middle of its star’s habitable zone. If confirmed, it would surpass even Kepler 452 b to become the most Earth-like world astronomers have ever found beyond our solar system… »

OK for KOI-7016.01 (K-452b) and KOI-7235.01
Where can I find the others ?

Exactly where is the other also interesting candidates like KOI-4878.01 than it's an earth-size in HZ of a F type star? And what about KOI-7235.01,KOI-5737.01,KOI-2194.03 (Kepler-371 system with 2 planets already confirmed) this are all earth-size around G type stars HZ like our Sun,on this last Kepler announcement I don't hear one word of this very interesting candidates, neither see then on the graphics of potential HZ planets. Where are all those?

They much more interesting candidates than By the size than Kepler-452b for me.

They are added to previous kepler planets candidates. There are almost 35 planets under 1.5 earth radius with insolation between 1.15-0.35 earth, around 7 of them around G star so where is the success to glorify kepler 452 b? Nasa really exaggerated. The most important factor in distinguishing super earths and mini neptunes is insolation as almost all 1.5 earth radius planets have high temperature over 700 K.Only two kepler planets with quite precise mass measurement with radius 1.6 earth have low incident flux and both seem to have density around 4.0g/cm3 .I guess it will be hard even for 1.5 earth radius planets to be completely rocky. So dividing line between rocky and gaseous exoplanets should not even consider planets with high incident fluxes as almost all of them   likely lost their volatile envelopes

...and now SETI somewhat pointlessly jumps on the "Kepler-452b is habitable" bandwagon. Is this science or just chasing the headlines?
