A Brown Dwarf Main Topic

We have "Unconfirmed/Unpublished Exoplanets Catalogue" for doubtful or suspected planetary objects. As you know, dear John Whatmough's original site included an "Extrasolar Planets Catalogue" and a "Brown Dwarfs List".

How about making a post about ONLY brown dwarf objects (i.e substellar non-planetary objects). It should include both brown dwarfs orbiting around standard stars (ex. GJ 229 B, 15 Sge B etc.), both twin brown dwarfs orbiting each other (ex. PPL 15 AB), either stand alone objects (ex. OTS 44).
Meanwhile I would submit a first draft of several substellar object detected so far, if you wish.

Obviously such a topic should be sticky and placed above "Unconfirmed/Unpublished Exoplanet Catalogue".



Someway we'd keep Whatmough's original subdivision.

The current way we don't have to start worrying about whether an object is a BD or a planet when we post the discovery.

Does a thread on an m sin i = 11 Jupiter masses object go into the planets or brown dwarfs forum? (The probability that such an object exceeds 13 Jupiter masses is roughly 50%)

What definition do we use for the dividing line? Supposing an object with 20 Jupiter masses but signs of a massive heavy element core is found - does that count as a superplanet or a brown dwarf? What about if a system of >13 Jupiter mass objects is found with a planet-like architecture?

Well since you have proposed this, perhaps you could answer some of the questions I raised about how to deal with the borderline topics.

And here's another one: should the recent HW Virginis detection have been filed under the "planets" category (as planet+superplanet system), the "brown dwarfs" category (as sub-brown dwarf+brown dwarf), or perhaps both categories, or what?

Probably neither astrophysics are able to give a feasible limit for planet-brown dwarf at the moment. Usually the limit is put at 13-15 Jupiter masses.
However I think an object with more than 20 Jupiter masses should lay in "brown dwarf" regime. HW Vir c (or D, whatever) could just be in the middle. HD 162020 b could be a superplanet.
