| The Sun + A/2017 U1 is certainly an interesting variation on the difficult-to-source "the Sun, Jupiter, and assorted debris" quote about the makeup of the solar system. | |

| The origin of interstellar asteroidal objects like 1I/2017 U1 https://arxiv.org/abs/1711.03558The asteroid was apparently within 0.16 parsec of the early G-type(?) star TYC 4742-1027-1 some 1.3 million years ago. That's too far for it to have formed there, so it probably was simply passing near (at least as far as interstellar distances go). They also estimate that there's ~30,000 rogue interstellar asteroids of this size within 100 AU of the sun (or 100 trillion per cubic parsec). I don't know if the software they used considers gravitational perturbations of the asteroid's path caused by flying near (at least as far as interstellar distances go) other stars. If not, then it would be interesting to see if TYC 4742-1027-1 ends up getting a lot closer to the asteroid's actual path. _________________ Caps Lock: Cruise control for 'Cool'!

| Dybczyński & Królikowska "On the dynamical history of the recently discovered interstellar object A/2017 U1 - where does it come from?" https://arxiv.org/abs/1711.06618More attempts to identify the original star. Limited to about 30 pc of the sun, the best candidate identified (based on encounter velocity) is UCAC4 535-065571. There are small probabilities that the origin may be the exoplanet host star Gliese 876 or the A-type eclipsing binary Delta Capricorni. The closest encounter found was HIP 3757 but the relative velocity is 200 km/s. On the subject of the previous candidates from the Portegies Zwart et al. paper: - Quote :

We have checked all this cases and according to our calculations none of these stars came closer to A/2017 U1 that 20 pc. | The interstellar meteor CNEOS 2014-01-08 has been listed in Extrasolar Planet Encyclopedia http://exoplanet.eu/catalog/cneos_2014-01-08/The puzzling thing is that extrasolar meteors/asteroids/comets such as 'Oumuamua, Borisov and lately CNEOS 2014-01-08 are equated with "exoplanets" but besides their (almost) certain extrasolar origin/provenance these are everything but "planets" according to current accepted definition of planet. Right? Rather listing them among "Confirmed Exoplanets", wouldn't it better and less confusing to count these objects in a separate section of their own in Extrasolar Planet Encyclopedia to be named, say, "Exocomets", "Exometeors" or "Extrasolar Objects" in wide sense? Personally I think it would. | |
