An abstract from the programme for the 2nd Subaru International Conference:

http://www.naoj.org/SubaruConf09/

The detection of a new large mass planet orbiting around a K0 type star

Hiroki Harakawa
We report the detection of a new large mass planet orbiting around a K0 type star(V=8.26)
which has a minimum mass Msin i=8.9 Jupiter mass in a 692.9 day orbit by precise radial
velocity measurements from Subaru and Keck. The derived orbital parameters based on minimizing
chi square by down-hill simplex method suggest that these radial velocity variations
are consistent with an almost circular planet orbit and a Mars-like semimajor axis (e=0.04,
a=1.6AU). The residuals to a single-Keplerian fit suggest the possible stellar wobbling by
another companion which has lower mass and a shorter period than the primary one.

And maybe another planet in the system on the way.

Naah, I don't like teasers.
If there isn't the host star, it just makes me eager Razz

However there it would be a 12 Mj object at 1,100 AUs away from a T Tauri star to be announced too. cyclops

I wonder if the planet transits the star. If a transit could be obsered then one could also look for moons as it should be precisely these kinds of large planets (in fairly circular orbits) that may have earth sized moons orbiting them. These should be detectablel by kepler (though chances would be low) if it or something like it were to pointed in its direction.

With a period of almost 3 years, you'd have to wait awhile for confirmation...

Odds of a transit decrease as the planet gets farther from the star. At 600 days, there's not much of a chance.
But then again, we seem to have been extraordinarly lucky with transits so far. HD 80606 b, HD 17156 b, and... Bet Pic b perhaps.

HD 80606b and HD 17156b are favoured because of eccentricity and orbit geometry. (Actually HD 80606b is more favourable for eclipses, HD 17156b more favourable for transits)

Beta Pic b on the other hand... that IS genuinely lucky. (If it is confirmed)
