Equatorial Orbit vs Polar Orbit Empty
PostSubject: Equatorial Orbit vs Polar Orbit   Equatorial Orbit vs Polar Orbit Empty17th September 2010, 1:20 pm

If Earth orbitted the Sun in a Polar Orbit with the same distances and wobble, would the Earth enviroment be different?

Basically ignoring that most other stuff orbits the equatorial and asteroid bombardment of water.
The premise is does the polar orbit exhibit more radiation from the Solar Poles?

That depends on on the gravitational darkening of the star, which itself depends on the stellar rotation rate.

Stars that rotate fast enough to distort them into an oblate shape (e.g. Vega, Altair) have a temperature difference between polar and equatorial regions, so a planet in a polar orbit around such stars will get more radiation from the star.

For a sun-like star, I don't think there's a noticable difference.

You'd get a much better idea of what the solar activity looks like over the entire star... no need to go to do a Jupiter gravity-assist to view away from the solar equator.

Equatorial Orbit vs Polar Orbit Empty

Well, then it seems can make a dramatic difference.
Even if it was with our Sun.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliospheric_current_sheet
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helium_Focusing_Cone

Our Sun makes a difference in Cosmic Rays scattering, radiation output, and magnetic output.
A planet in exact polar orbit can get a dose of this.

If this holds true, then Earth crossing a high does of cosmic rays would suffer a strong electrica storms when it crosses. Perhaps the bolts would be twice as strong or twice as many bolts making it a deadly season.
