XO-5 is fairly old. Close to evolve off the main sequence Smile

HATNet has observed XO-5b (they discovered it independently but got scooped) and have released a paper which gives refined parameters based on the combined XO+HATNet dataset.

I find it interesting that all of these transiting planet scoops are going on. One of the 1SWASP candidates a while back was an XO planet, and there's this recent HAT-P-10/WASP-11 thing, and now HATnet/XO-5b.

Transiting planets may be rarer than I figured, or at least around the visual magnitudes typically searched.

Actually the independent observation of the planet is a good thing: it means we can regard the planet as "independently confirmed", which makes it far less likely it is some artifact of data reduction. I wonder if XO-5b would have been the mysteriously-missing HAT-P-8b...

One of the things that may cause problems with extending the sample of transiting planets is that there appears to be a "planet desert" at intermediate periods. Since transit probability goes down as orbital period increases, this may significantly slow down the rate.

Oh yes, indeed. I meant not to suggest that this was so much a bad thing.

My thoughts exactly.
