Imaging discovery of a 400K companion to a nearby RV exoplanet host star
Using high-contrast imaging with the SPHERE instrument at the VLT, we report the detection of a brown dwarf companion to an exoplanet host star. The newly imaged brown dwarf is the coldest known companion to a solar-like star, with an effective temperature of 400K and a spectral type at the T/Y transition. By combining the imaging data with 17 years of radial velocity monitoring, we are able to precisely measure the dynamical mass, temperature, luminosity and orbital parameters of the brown dwarf, making it a crucial benchmark for formation and evolutionary models. The system is also a complex dynamical environment, with simulations showing that the brown dwarf may be interacting strongly with the exoplanet through Lidov-Kozai interactions, which could be the cause of the planet's extremely large orbital eccentricity (e~0.9). | |

| Reading through that, sounds like there's a good possibility that HD 4113 C is a binary brown dwarf. Or perhaps something else is going on, e.g. another long-period object in the system. | |
