Greenhouse gases on top of the hellishly high levels of stellar radiation... NASA Hubble Space Telescope Finds Carbon Dioxide on an Extrasolar Planet

So of the "big four" molecules of interest in finding Earth-clones, HD 189733b has methane, carbon dioxide and water. What's next, an oxygen atmosphere and a full-fledged ecology of weird hot Jupiter beasties floating around in the alkali metal haze?

Very exciting discovery! What about HD 209458 b? CO_2 there perhaps?
The press release also reports the discovery of CO.

ArXiv paper.
http://arxiv.org/abs/0812.1844

Also, I edited the post title to say "HD 189733 b", as opposed to just "HD 189733". I hope you don't mind.

Laughing Laughing Laughing

The paper suggests that there may also be a detection of trace amounts of ammonia, ethane, and acetylene in the Spitzer data, but including those does not significantly improve the data. Either better data, or data covering a broader wavelength, will be needed to confirm.
