Paper on arXiv investigating a formation scenario for binary gas giants. The giant impact process might form terrestrial binary planets (e.g. Earth-Moon, Pluto-Charon given as examples), but probably not for gas giants. Instead they propose that such systems would form via tidal capture. Doesn't look particularly healthy for other planets in the system though...
