| ESO to hold virtual press conference to discuss major HARPS exoplanet findings http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.rss.html?pid=34564 - Quote :
- On Monday 12 September 2011, astronomers will report significant new results in the field of exoplanets, obtained with the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, better known as HARPS, the spectrograph on ESO's 3.6-metre telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile.
An online press conference to announce the new results and offer journalists the opportunity for discussion with the scientists will be held at 16:00 CEST on Monday, 12 September 2011. I'll update the thread title when appropriate.Done. _________________ Caps Lock: Cruise control for 'Cool'!

| I guess they have found my homeplanet around Tau Ceti. Seriously, that's got to be something interesting. Probably they will also announce again the detections of low-mass planets around 82 Eridani, GJ 785 and HD 85512. Plus something unexpected... I still wait for GJ 433 and GJ 667 Cb btw... | |

| There hasn't yet been an official press release for the HD 85512b detection: the news outlets that picked it up did so off the arXiv release. As this is hardly the kind of discovery that they'd keep quiet, my money would be on this. | |

| Hi for all Excuse my poor english, I' m spanish and don't speak english very well. I' m very excited with the conference, it might be possible that HARPS team could announce a planet around Alpha Centauri B | |

That would be exciting! I suspect it might have more to do with the GTO programme results though. _________________ Caps Lock: Cruise control for 'Cool'!

| Another spanish fellow I would not bet on Alpha Centauri B planet. It would be great if true , but I should agree more with Sirius, GTO results presentation , and maybe an update on some GJ star systems . _________________ --- Caution. This post contains broken english inside. Handle with care.

| Hola! Yes, it is possible; but remember that the HARPS team has on monday a poster about the results of radial velocities search on alpha cen B and that they announced in the paper of HD 85512b a forthcoming paper: - Quote :
- The RV scatter of Alpha Cen B (HD 128621) is not indicated in the table, since it is afected by the long-term drift caused by its stellar companion. A detailed discussion specific to Alpha Cen B will be presented in a forthcoming paper.
They have studied deeply that star. Maybe they haven' t found anything.... but they might have very good news. We will have the answer in a couple of days.

| Hello everybody ! My very first post Thanks to all members and your contribution The teleconference presenters are: * Dr. Francesco Pepe, Geneva Observatory, Switzerland * Dr. Lisa Kaltenegger, Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg, Germany * Dr. Markus Kissler-Patig or Dr. Joe Liske, ESO, on the future of exoplanet research with the E-ELT Lisa Kaltenegger is not in the HARPS team, but she’s Co-writer of the paper « a habitable planet around HD 85512 ? » But may be there will be another discoveries in habitable zone… News from Alpha Cen B coming soon !! Next week there will be a great meeting September 11 - 17 , 20 Extreme Solar Systems II Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA In particular that session : « A detailed discussion specific to Alpha Cen B will be presented in a forthcoming paper » (The HARPS search for earth-like planets in the HZ page 4) | |

« A detailed discussion specific to Alpha Cen B will be presented in a forthcoming paper » (The HARPS search for earth-like planets in the HZ page 4) Welcome, Led_Zep I' m very excited with the conference, too. But maybe they will talk only about the magnetic cycles of Alpha Cen B, or about upper limits in planetary detection.

| Kepler and Harps competing to outshine the other, nothing better than a little competition to motivate the scientists. | |

| 50 new planets including 16 super-earth !!!
"...Astronomers using ESO’s world-leading exoplanet hunter HARPS have today announced a rich haul of more than 50 new exoplanets, including 16 super-Earths, one of which orbits at the edge of the habitable zone of its star. By studying the properties of all the HARPS planets found so far, the team has found that about 40% of stars similar to the Sun have at least one planet lighter than Saturn. The HARPS spectrograph on the 3.6-metre telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile is the world’s most successful planet finder [1]. The HARPS team, led by Michel Mayor (University of Geneva, Switzerland), today announced the discovery of more than 50 new exoplanets orbiting nearby stars, including sixteen super-Earths [2]. This is the largest number of such planets ever announced at one time [3]. The new findings are being presented at a conference on Extreme Solar Systems where 350 exoplanet experts are meeting in Wyoming, USA....

Another weird thing. EPE announces 41 planets. But it seems there are 50, right? Browsing the paper provided in this thread I've found these planet under forthcoming publication or Marmier (2011): - HD 27631 b - HD 65216 (A)c* - HD 98649 b - HD 106515 Ab - HD 114386 c* - HD 166724 b - HD 196067 b (or Mu2 Octantis b) - HD 220689 b (*=Those labelled with asterisk are additional planets in already known exoplanet host system) Now 41+8 does 49. There is one left! Where is it??

| Well well well this is interesting, and before they published papers for the last batch of planets as well.
Regarding the second paper in which the various system details are given, it is quit annoying that the orbital elements published in that paper are incomplete. The tables do not include the angle ω or the time of periastron.
