32 planets from HARPS

I think sources citing that are referring to the planets + brown dwarfs = 32.

However no brown dwarf is actually mentioned. Those systems that seemed to host them (HD 85390 and HD 103197) have turned out hosting low mass planets.

There is HIP 103019 left though

So HD 103197 b changed parameters too eh? Argh.

When the papers for these systems come out, perhaps there will be more planets in some of them (much like how HD 181433 was announced as a 2 planet system back in June of last year, but the paper showed a third planet).

If you transpose Jupiter and Earth masses, both of those end up in the brown dwarf mass range. Hmmmm.

So HIP 103019 b could be a 0.149 Jupiter masses planet? Since mass is reported 54.6.

However erroneous communications comes from EPE, since message reported "brown dwarfs", whilst objects were actually dwarf jovians.

Cannot find anything on arXiv again tonight - where are the submissions? Also thinking that if sub stellar are given b designation when significantly > 13 Mj yet well below 80 Mj (ongoing fusion approx) how are they to be classified?

The HD 40307 et al. systems announced last June took several months for their papers to show up.

That's a really good question

I can't remember if it is COROT or SuperWASP that holds the record for longest time between press release and appearance of the discovery paper.

Surely COROT, which seems is going to announce the millennium discovery, the top-secret facts and then...hot jupiters as usual.

Except the one and only super-earth in tightest orbit.

In the original text-based table, four systems are listed as having a "curved drift", which may mean another planet: HD 44219, HD 148156, HIP 5158, and HD 104067.

Steinn Sigurðsson's take on this at Dynamics of Cats has some interesting musings about the implications of this for the planet-metallicity correlation.

Interesting read. Could it be that gas planets aren't actually preferentially formed around high-metallicity stars? Instead, could it be that high metallicity disks simply help to facilitate migration, leading to more easily detected planets?

These are the planets that were announced by Mayor and co. at a conference back in October, but we've been waiting for the papers for. (Atctually 30 + 2 brown dwarfs if I remember correctly)

The interesting part of the abstract:

Quote :

Our discoveries suggest that giant planets in long period orbits are not uncommon around moderately
metal-poor stars.

So it seems that metal-poor stars have planetary systems with rather different architectures to those around metal-rich stars of similar masses. If you want your gas giants out beyond the ice line, it seems that going for fewer metals is the way to go.

Really interesting that they think that on quiet stars they might be able to push the
RV sensitivity down to ~ 0.1 MSec-1 with a brute force sampling method.

Wonder how many observations they would need.

58% having low mass planets is quite the prediction!

Given a number of observations, if you quadruple them, you can detect signals with half the RV amplitude. If you take 16 times as many observations, then you can detect signals with 1/4 the RV amplitude.

Regarding pushing down to low mass planets, it looks like there are a couple of upcoming talks in the same program on the matter of detecting exo-Earths.
